Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Famco Chimney Cap Installation: The Sacramento Owner’s Guide
We install Famco chimney caps and Famco-compatible caps throughout Sacramento, with most installations running between $285 and $540 including the cap itself and the labor to secure it properly. If you’re reading this, you probably already know your cap is the problem: it’s rusted through, a branch knocked it loose during a January windstorm, or you looked up one evening and realized the screen is gone and birds have been getting in. We stock a range of Famco caps on our trucks and can usually complete the swap the same day we come out.
Which Famco Models This Applies To
Famco makes caps for nearly every flue type you’ll find on a Sacramento home: single-flue and multi-flue masonry chimneys, round metal flues, and air-cooled or insulated Class A pipe. The first thing we do is match the cap to your flue’s outside dimension, not the inside diameter. A common gotcha: an 8-inch round metal flue often needs a 10-inch or 11-inch cap because Famco caps slip over the flue, not inside it. If your old cap is still up there, check the underside for a stamped Famco part number starting with “FC” or “MC.” If it’s gone, we measure the flue tile or pipe with a tape measure before we recommend anything. One thing to know about Sacramento weather specifically: our dry summers and wet winters mean bare galvanized caps corrode faster here than in coastal climates. We generally recommend Famco’s stainless steel or copper options for local homes because they shrug off the hot-dry-to-cold-wet cycling we get every year. We are an independent service provider, not a Famco dealer; we buy direct from distributors and pass the exact part cost along to you.

Signs Your Famco Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
- You hear birds or scratching inside the fireplace. The screen mesh on a Famco cap has deteriorated or peeled away at a corner, and now a bird is nesting inside your flue. A nest in the flue will eventually block smoke and draft, and the nesting material is flammable.
- Rain pools inside the firebox after a storm. The cap’s lid or skirt has rusted through or the cap has shifted, and now water is running straight down the flue and into the firebox. Sacramento’s winter rains make this one easy to spot.
- You see rust streaks down the side of the chimney or flue pipe. This often means the cap itself is rusting, not the masonry or pipe below. When a galvanized Famco cap starts to go, the rust runs downhill and stains everything beneath it.
- The cap is missing entirely after a windstorm. We see this in Sacramento every storm season, mostly on older caps that were never mechanically fastened. They sit there loose, a strong gust catches them, and the cap goes into the neighbor’s yard.
- Smoke smells drift back into the living room on windy days. A damaged or missing cap allows wind to press down into the flue and push smoke backward. The right cap breaks that pressure and lets the flue draw properly even when it’s gusting.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For a standard single-flue masonry or round metal flue, a complete Famco cap installation in Sacramento typically runs $285 to $540. That number includes the cap itself, the stainless mounting hardware, and our labor. The biggest driver is the cap’s finish and size: a basic galvanized single-flue cap sits at the low end, while a larger stainless or copper cap for a multi-flue chimney runs higher. Multi-flue caps, which cover two or more flue tiles with one lid, are custom-measured and usually run $450 to $700 installed. We quote everything as a flat price before any work starts, and the cap cost is shown separately from the labor on your written estimate. If the old cap is loose but the flue tile below is still sound, we can usually reuse the existing mounting location and finish the swap in under an hour. Our 365-Day Done Right Promise covers the installation, so if the cap loosens or shifts within a year, we come back and make it right.
DIY or Call Us?
There are two parts to this answer. The first is that the diagnosis is easy to do safely: you can look up at your cap from the ground with a pair of binoculars and see if the screen is torn, the lid is tilted, or the cap is gone. The second is that the repair belongs on a roof, and we don’t think a loose ladder, a sloped roof, and a chimney crown are worth what a professional installation costs. Sacramento homes built in the 1960s and 1970s often have steep rooflines and fragile clay tile crowns that crack when they’re kneeled on. We bring a full fall-protection setup and a second set of hands on every chimney cap job, and we photograph everything before and after. If you’d rather talk it through first, call us at (279) 243-2173 and we’ll tell you over the phone what kind of cap your flue likely needs and what the installed price will look like.
FAQs
A galvanized Famco cap in Sacramento typically lasts 5 to 8 years before rust becomes visible and the screen begins to fail; stainless steel and copper Famco caps routinely last 15 to 20 years here. The deciding factor is our climate: long dry summers bake the galvanized coating, then winter rain sits in the seams and accelerates corrosion. If you want to buy this part once and not think about it again, stainless is the right call for most Sacramento homes. Call (279) 243-2173 and we’ll give you an exact installed price for your flue size.
Generally no, because what fails on a Famco cap is the screen mesh and the rusted lid, and neither is an economical repair once the weather has gotten to them; the labor to patch a rusted cap costs as much as installing a new one. There’s one exception: if the cap is still solid but the mounting hardware has loosened, we can often re-secure it without replacing anything. We’ll tell you which situation you have before we quote you anything.
A standard single-flue Famco cap installation in Sacramento takes about 45 to 90 minutes from the time our technician gets on the ladder to the time the cap is secured and photographed. Multi-flue caps take longer because they’re custom-measured and sometimes need a second visit to install once the order comes in. We’ll give you a time window when you book.
We stock common Famco sizes for round metal flues and single-flue masonry chimneys, along with compatible caps from DuraFlex and Olympia Chimney when a different profile fits better. If you have a multi-flue chimney or a non-standard flue dimension, we’ll measure on site and order the exact cap for a follow-up visit, usually within a week. Call (279) 243-2173 and we’ll let you know before we come out whether your size is something we carry.
